Also known as Garden Violet, English Violet, Common Violet
Known herbally as Banafsa, Banafsha or Banaksa
Hardy, long lasting evergreen perennial.
Low growing semi-groundcovers that grow to around 15cm tall.
Although native to Europe and Asia, the colourful flowers with their sweet and gentle perfume have made these plants very popular in gardens around the world.
Uses include cascading down walls, in tubs, on uneven ground, embankments, rockeries, hanging baskets, scattered and mass plantings, hiding unsightly bare spots etc.
Great for under trees, shade houses, ferneries, shady places down sides of houses etc.
Long living, they can be left to grow to their full spread or easily contained by regular pruning.
Grows best in shade to semi-shade.
Keep out of the afternoon sun in Summer.
Long flowering through Winter and Spring with random flowers throughout Summer and Autumn.
This variety sells well due to its ability to create a deep evergreen scented flowering groundcover in quite shaded to semi-shaded areas.
Herbal uses: I have found many sites on Google stating that the flowers are edible, but haven't tried this myself.
Please seek appropriate medical advice before killing yourself with herbs :-)
