Hydrangea Leuchtfeuer x 5
Hydrangea macrophylla Leuchtfeuer

Beautifully red flowering plants that work well scattered or massed around your garden.

Often used to add contrast and colour to gardens.

Some people prefer to let the natural soil condition determine their own hydrangea flower colours, whilst other people want a specific hue and will work on their soil to influence the colours produced.

Much of Australia has acidic soil, which means that flower colours of many of the moptop hydrangea tend towards blue.

Hydrangeas need aluminum sulfate to colour blue. This becomes accessible in acidic soil.

Also, if you add aluminum sulphate, it will help increase acidity in the soil.

To obtain the pinks and reds you will need to increase the alkalinity of the soil.

Adjusting the pH levels of your soil.
“Making it Happen” Increasing the pH level.

Powdered lime is the most popular way to (increase your pH) make your soil more alkaline.

You can also use wood ash or powdered shell.

Reducing the pH level. You can lower the pH by adding any of the following to your soil at the recommended rates given on the packaging: Ferrous sulphate, aluminum sulphate, Sulphur and also the addition of organic matter will reduce the pH as it decomposes.

Pine tree needles will also work well.

Most hydrangea are deciduous which means that they will lose some or all of their leaves in Winter and will reshoot in Spring. They can be cut back hard in late Autumn and they will reshoot in Spring.

Ideal for pots, tubs, verandah, bird habitats, scattered plantings, mass plantings, cut flower, cottage gardens, coastal areas.

For best results in Australia, please plant them in a place that does not get Summer afternoon sun, unless it is a moist area.
