6 x Hydrangea Plants - 3 Types

We have at least 3-6 types of hydrangea in stock.

This listing is for a random mix of hydrangea varieties that we currently stock.

This usually comprises a mixture of pink, white, blue or red.

In either the lacecap or mophead style.

If you need a specific variety of Hydrangea or even a mixed pack, please search Hydrangea on our website or email us to see which ones we currently stock.

These shrubs are a beautiful and colorful garden addition

Also adding great color to the cottage garden

Hydrangea come in both Mophead and Lacecap flowering forms.

The lacecap hydrangeas are different to the mophead varieties in that they have an inside ring of small fertile flowers that are surrounded by an outer display of florets which contrast well amongst the deep green foliage.

Notes below apply to all varieties:

Hydrageas prefer a moist position in either full sun to semi shade.

Beautiful leaves that are lime green when young and then maturing to deep green.

You will often see them grown for their foliage structures as well.

They make great specimens inter-planted through gardens as well as growing well in large pots or even as espaliers against a fence or in small gardens.

They will form a good shape by themselves although you can trim and train them to your desired growth requirements.

They can be cut back hard if you want and they will regrow.

Adjusting hydrangea flower colour

Some of the hydrangea varieties we sell will not change color when planted in different soils (EG: White form) while others do.

Many of hydrangea varieties have their flower color determined by the acid/alkaline pH levels in the soil.

Many people are content to plant them straight into their chosen positon without adding anything to the soil and letting the natural soil condition determine their own colors, whilst other people want a specific hue and will work on their soil acid levels to influence the flower colors.

Much of Australia has acidic soil, which means that flower colors of many of the moptop hyrdangea tend towards blue.

Hydrangeas need aluminum sulfate to color blue.

This becomes accessible in acidic soil.

Also if you add aluminum sulphate it will help increase acidity in the soil.

To obtain the pinks and reds you will need to increase the alkalinity of the soil.

Adjusting the pH levels of  your soil.

“Making it Happen”

 Increasing the pH level.

Powdered lime is the most popular way to (increase your pH) make your soil more alkaline.

You can also use wood ash or powdered shell.

 Reducing the pH level.

You can lower the pH by adding any of the following to your soil at the recommended rates given on the packaging:
Ferrous sulphate, aluminum sulphate, Sulphur and also the addition of organic matter will reduce the pH as it decomposes.

Pine tree needles will also work well.

Most hyrangea are deciduous which means that they will lose some or all of their leaves in winter and will reshoot in spring.

They can be cut back hard in late Autumn or even at other times of the year.
