They have a symbiotic relationship amongst their roots with rhizobium/rhizobia//nitrogen-fixing bacteria.
These bacteria take nitrogen from the air and turn it in a form that is usable by it's host plant (as well as the plants around it)   and convert it to a form usable by plants as fertiliser, helping plants grow in poor soils.
