Hydrangea Mathilda Gutges x 1

Hydrangea macrophylla

Beautifully flowering plants that work well scattered or massed around your garden.

Can be cut back hard in late Autumn, and they will reshoot in Spring.

Bird and bee attracting.

Often used for borders, scattered plantings and to add contrast and colour to cottage gardens.

Position: A moist position in either full shade or semi-shade. (For the best results, plant in an area that doesn't get the afternoon Summer sun, unless it is a moist area.)

Foliage: Large, glossy green leaves. Deciduous. Often grown for their foliage structures.

Flowers: Blue or red/pink mophead clusters up to 25cm across in Summer.

Height and width: Up to 1.5 metres.

We usually have 5 to 10 types of Hydrangea in stock, both lacecap and mophead varieties.

Important Information

Acid levels in the soil will greatly determine the flower colour of this Hydrangea variety. (Many people are content to plant them straight into their chosen positon without adding anything to the soil and letting the natural soil condition determine their own colours, whilst other people want a specific hue and will work on their soil to influence the flower colours.)

Acidic soils bring out the blues and purples. The majority of soils in Australia are acidic.

Alkaline soils bring out pinks to reds.

To increase acid levels in your soil you can add aluminium sulphate, ferrous sulphate or pine needles to bring out the intense blues of the variety.

For greater alkalinity add powdered lime, wood ash or powdered shell. This need to be done before blooms form.
