Chaenomeles japonica Winter Cheer
Winter Cheer is one of the earliest flowering varieties of Japanese quince.
Produces quince like fruit suitable for jellies, cooking and preserves.
Tough as nails.
Mum grew this one as a hedge in Benalla (central Victoria) when I was rugrat.
Mum was not a gardener back then and killed many an innocent plant.
These continued to thrive and grow, year after year.
Habit: Shrub to approx 60cm to 100cm
Position: Full sun to part shade
Foliage: Glossy green leaves emerge immediately after flowering
Flowering: Late Winter to Spring
Flowers: Small cup shaped orange to scarlet blooms on bare stems
Deciduous (loses leaves in Autumn/Winter)
Frost and drought tolerant once established.
Uses: Borders, hedging, pots, cut flowers.
They make great hedges.
