Elephant Bush

Portulacaria afra

Similar to Crassula ovata

Also known as Dwarf Jade, Porkbush, Spekboom

An attractive, fast growing succulent shrub that is native to South Africa.
 
Generally self-sufficient once established, but needs protection from frosts.
 
Has reddish-brown stems that become interwoven as the plant ages.
 
Can be trimmed and trained into shape. Will grow into a thicket if left unpruned.
 
A popular bonsai variety.
 
Great for rockeries, hanging baskets, pots, bonsai, indoor plantings, feature plantings etc.

Position: Full sun to semi-shade when planted outdoors. Indirect sunlight when grown indoors. Good drainage is essential. Watering can be suspended in Winter when the plant is dormant.

Foliage: Glossy green leaves up to 1.2cm in length. Semi-evergreen. The leaves are edible and are particularly enjoyed by goats and tortoises. 

Flowers: Small pink star-shaped flowers in clusters, usually in late Spring and early Summer.

Height: Approx 2-4 metres, however the stems can break easily and they are therefore more likely to be shorter.

Width: Approx 1.5 metres.
